One of the best things about Philadelphia is the arts. With just a quick walk around the city, you can find everything from beautiful murals to museums housing some of the most prized paintings and installations. But the arts in Philly isn’t all about paintings and murals. It’s about the performances, too.
So, where can you see some of the most innovative and creative performances around the city? The Fringe Festival, of course!
The Fringe Festival: What You Need to Know
The Fringe Festival showcases an array of contemporary performances all throughout the city. For over two weeks every September, this event has given Philly natives and tourists the opportunity to experience an eclectic mix of performances. And this year’s run won’t be any different.
The 2017 Fringe Festival will run from September 7 to September 24. And just like when it first started 20 years ago, it’ll give an unfiltered opportunity for independent artists to create their own work in the spirit of the international “Fringe” movement.
To give you a better idea of what this event is all about, here’s a breakdown of some of the things you can expect at the year’s Fringe Festival…
- Performances galore: The Fringe Festival will showcase more than 1,000 artistically daring performances. During its 18-day run, you’ll be able to enjoy everything from dance to music to visual art and even theater performances. Want to see something that’ll make you laugh? The Fringe Festival will feature comedy and improv shows, too.

- Arts all over the city: When we said that the festival takes over the entire city, we weren’t kidding. The event will feature shows all over Philly, including Kensington, Old City, Northern Liberties, and Fairmount. And if you can’t make it out to these sites, you can find a ton of festival presentations online, as well.

- Late night festivities: The fun doesn’t end when the venues and shows close for the day. Every night of the festival, you can keep the party going at FringeArts’ center on the Delaware River Waterfront. With live music, food, and beer, it’s the perfect place to let loose after a long day of taking in all the amazing art featured in this festival.
