Among the many gifts and parties, the holiday season also seems to entail an awful lot of treats. Cookies, candies, chocolates—the list goes on. Need a way to burn off some of those excess calories? Well, Philadelphia’s Ugly Sweater Run 5K is much more than a workout. It’s the holliest, jolliest jog in the entire city. And it’ll be here before you know it!
The Running of the Ugly Sweaters
This year on December 16, 2017, Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park will be flush with an abundance of fuzzy, jingly, jangly, flashy—well, let’s just settle on ostentatious sweaters. The uglier, the better. The Ugly Sweater Run, which spans approximately 3.1 miles, starts at 8:30 in the morning. However, runners should start arriving as early as 6:30 to pick up their bibs. Though the run itself is the crux of the day, you’ll find so much more than that at Fairmount Park on December 16. ’Tis the season, after all, and from start to finish, you’ll be surrounded by inflatable decorations, classic holiday music, as well as a massive, life-sized snow globe to cap off the course. Throughout the event, there will be plenty of fun and game for all. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy steamy hot cocoa or even a special cocktail provided by the 5K’s sponsor, Kahlua.
Running to Stay Warm
Of course, the Ugly Sweater Run isn’t all about fun and games. All proceeds from the day go to a great cause, too. The Ugly Sweater Run supports One Warm Coat (OWC), an organization dedicated to ensuring everyone has something to keep them warm this season. While some underprivileged families may struggle to come up with the money for a warm coat, OWC has made it their mission to keep everyone cozy and safe!
